They did a great job of showing how OP Ukoku Sanzo is, he was Pwning Sanzo all over the place. And perfect casting of Hōchū Ōtsuka as Ukoku, most remember his VA of Satō from Ajin. Yeah, that crazy azz 'Grandpa' that was kicking azz and taking no names!!!

Also rare that a VA that is the Antagonist in two series in the same cour, the other is 'Donny' in Love of Kill.

Last two episodes should be fairly epic.

I agree with you, this arc is so much better now.
I like the fact that they added Sanzo's memories fading away as he was being swallowed by void.
Despite being a badass, it just shows how much power his mind holds over him. Sanzo's living by a carefree "I don't give a shit" attitude precisely because he can't face his traumas.
Ukoku mind-playing him and using them against him is actually a very clever move, because Sanzo is completely vulnerable against mind-messing attacks.
(Hope he finds a way around that before arriving at Houtou Castle!)

Also, this aside.
Ukoku having the skills and strength to break Sanzo's every bones despite being a sheltered lab-rat most of the time is actually scary.
Sanzo is a combat beast that has been fighting-travelling for more than a year , yet Ukoku is overpowering him on his own field like it's nothing.
That's sick !

By the end of last episode, we see Hakkai, Gojyo and Goku deciding to go back to Sanzo in order to rekindle their bond, and restart their journey to the west.

At the beginning of this episode, we see them roaming the forest with their jeep, litteraly searching for Sanzo ; because they were told he was spotted there.

As yokais, they're all able to feel powerful and murdering energies. Hakkai, being a qigong user is especially attuned.
It was told and demonstrated many time in the story.

Though Ukoku's power can't be traced, they wouldn't miss Sanzo emitting bloody murder, nor the energy of his Maten Kyomon being used (albeit briefly) in their surroundings.

Also, they're running full speed on a jeep, while Sanzo's travelling on foot. Even if they don't know where to search him, they'll still be much faster in the end.

So this episode's ending isn't that far-fetched :
Sanzo being saved last minute may be main-character's plot armor ; but the 3 of them finding him is actually consistent with the plot.

Finally they reunited after a few episodes

Damm the scene where his memories fade away and when it comes to Goku... Sanzo be like "Don't let me forget my child..." and then BAM that same child comes to his rescue! Goku's and Sanzo's father son dynamic is so adorable, especially when you rewatch Gaiden and Burial... his child is slowly growing up but Sanzo will always be his guardian... just all the dad jokes, references and Goku directly comparing Sanzo to a parent.... too too precious for this world... and just look at Sanzo, he really can't function without constant annoyance of his group.

Now please all of you stay together, you all idiots complete each other so get in your dragon jeep and get to east already so the crow creep doesn't need to stalk you whenever he feels like it!

And it's also true for the others.
They're all on the verge of breaking and loosing themselves to their respective traumas... but being together provides with reasons to keep going.

Hakkai needs to care and nurture people, esle he'll just go back to being suicidal, because he craves human connection and lost the only one that mattered to him anyway. (Though he finally seemed to have made progress with this)
Gojyo needs a home and family-like people by his side to ground him, discipline him and keep him in check, else he's just gonna rot away doing the stupidest stuff ; because he never learned to care about himself or live a structured daily life, nor had anyone to hold him accountable.
Sanzo needs constant stimuli to keep living in the present and not let himself be eaten by his traumas. The guy's survival instinct strives on anger, so having Goku and Gojyo pester him endlessly keeps him out of his guttered mind-hell. Hakkai being a good mom/dad -like figure helps, too ; as well as having to take care of something constantly. (The Chang'An temple, Goku, his mission...)
As for Goku, he needs to validate his existence, and found his raison d'être in the sole people that paid him attention in 500 years. He needs to be with those people, or else he'll just go back to his own amnesia, void, nothingness and unbearable loneliness.
